ecclesiastical = to do with the church factotum = general dogsbody [Definitions of factotum on the Web:a servant employed to do a variety of jobs] so its a posh way of describing someone who probably did menial work for the church. Not sure what though. Most church jobs are specific - pew opener, beadle, verger etc. nell |
