> The GEDCOM you make is also a backup for your own FTM > in effect as well... A GEDCOM exported from FTM only contains the data that a GEDCOM file type is able to handle. It is not equivalent to a FTW file from FTM, which has the ability to store a wider range of data types, such as images. So GEDCOM file is NOT a backup of FTM data, its just a copy of *some* of the data that could potentially be in a FTW file. Cheers, Bill Sydney, Australia |

Yvonne, If you have your tree on family tree maker, then you can't loose it by uploading a copy to Genes re-united. In fact it is by far the best way of getting your information onto the site, much easier than trying to type it all in. In FTM just select File / Export File / Entire file then when the dialogue box opens selec GEDCOM as the file type. Remember where is is saved as you will need to go there when you follow Laird's instructions to load it up. The GEDCOM you make is also a backup for your own FTM in effect as well... As the same time make sure you know where your FTM data files are held on your computer. Take a copy to CD, if you have one, from time to time. |

CC&P'ed from the Help facility ... To import a Gedcom file that you have created, click on the browse button to select the Gedcom from your own files. Click on the 'Import Gedcom' button once. Your file must have the extension .ged in order to upload successfully. Please note that it may take a few minutes for the file to load depending on the amount of data you are loading and how busy the site is at the time. When the file has successfully loaded, you will be prompted to click on a button that will display the first page of your tree. Helpful tips: 1). To upload the Gedcom File, make sure that your tree in Genes Reunited has no entries in it apart from the owner of the tree. The owner's details in the tree must include forename, surname and year of birth. In order that the gedcom file can successfully link up with the owner of your tree and be uploaded to the site, one of the entries in the file must have the same forename, surname and year of birth. 2). Please note that at present we do not accept files in utf-8 or unicode format. If your software allows you to choose a character set for your export please select 'Ansi'. For example, using PAF 5 select the option 'Other gedcom 5.5' and char set 'Ansi'. The vast majority of software packages will create the file in the correct format by default. 3). Currently your family tree in Genes Reunited cannot show both biological and adopted parents for the same child. If you load from a gedcom that contains this information please bear in mind that the results will not include both sets of parent information. At present it may be better to split your tree into two and load under different Registrations. 4). Genes Reunited is compatible with Gedcom files from the following software : Personal Ancestral File, Family Tree Maker, Family Historian 2.1, Roots Magic, Family Tree 4 and Legacy 5. You should be able to import a Gedcom from most software, but we are currently unable to guarantee this. You can now import even more information from your Gedcom. You will be able to upload the following information : baptism date, place of baptism, marriage date, place of marriage, occupation, known as (nickname), source of data and notes. If you have any trouble uploading this data then please contact us at the support team. |

Never done this, but if you already have your info on Family Tree Maker it should stay there, you are just copying it, so you shouldn't lose it. If you are nervous, you could make a back up to disc of your info first. I understand this is relatively easy as long as you haven't got any names on GR tree already. nell |
