Chasing the wrong family?

Help please, someone. I've found what I thought must be my husband's great grandmother on 1881 census. Her name was Mary Ann Trotman born in New Charlton, Kent and married William Deacon on Christmas Day 1869. Their marriage certificate has her father down as Charles Trotman, profession Boiler Maker. Found Charles Wm.Trotman on 1881 - same birthplace and occupation, but all the ages are wrong. He's only 37 and Mary Ann is only 12, i.e. she would be getting married in the year she was born!!! There seems too many coincidences for it to be entirely the wrong family but can someone please explain where I go from here. Thanks. By the way, the membership number thread gave me light relief in an otherwise frustrating session. Jo

Perhaps the Charles you have found could be your Mary Ann's brother, and his daughter Mary Ann was named after her? You will often find the same names going round and round again within a family. Kate.

Josephine Don't panic! Without certificates to prove it you won't know, but I think it highly likely that the Charles Trotman you found on the 1881 census is your Mary Ann's brother, named after his father, and his daughter Mary Ann is named after your Mary Ann (and quite likely the elder Mary Ann & younger Charles' mother too). Perhaps Charles Trotman senior was dead by 1881? nell

Many thanks Kate and Nell, It's all beginning to make sense. I'll come back to it tomorrow after a long rest! At least I will be able to sleep now. Jo
