Could someone look at image on 1871 and tell me the occupation of the head? Dorothy Raine b abt 1804 living at St James Green Thirsk Thanks in advance Debby P.S. And is a governess the same as a schoolmistress? I thought a governess would be in teaching in someones home?

I think Dorothy's occupation reads Derives income from Houses Land &c Yes I would expect a governess to teach in a private house and a school mistress in a school though I suppose individual enumerators may have had other ideas.

Sorry Jess should have said I had the 1861. Judith could be right but as her husband was a sacking manufacturer I didn't expect her to have that much money. She was 22 years younger than him though - wonder if her parents were wealthy. Wouldn't mind but it's a real twig of my tree and not hardly related but it's the first musical family I've come up with through Dorothys daughter Mary so I'm really interested. Saddo Debby LOL

'manufacturer' sounds to me as if he owned the factory rather than being a paid worker so Jess is probably right that the business provided the income, either it was sold and invested in houses or the '&c' in 'Houses Land &c' refers to the factory. Sorry it was only a twig, you could have been an heiress! Judith

Jess - Didn't see your amended reply - yes that's probably it - doesn't seem to have had any sons so maybe try and find what happened to it! Judith - Oh don't go there! Another branch of this line left about 13 houses and some of them are still there - I have his will - fascinating stuff! Debby
