Could anyone tell me in what format the GRO records are kept at the library and how easy are they to view? I have used 1837 online and wondered if they are in the same format. I intend to go and look up lots of gaps that I have and it would be useful to know so that I can prepare a list accordingly. |

They will be on microfiche and look EXACTLY like 1837, which is EXACTLY as they appear in the original index books at the FRC. The earlier indexes are handwritten and later ones typed. Some are very difficult to decipher, others are as clear as day. Pot luck, really! nell |

Some might also be on microfilm a pain if you are looking for Youngs. Two sorts of film, those supplied by GRO and are green and 16mm and 35mm positive film supplied by LDS. Birmingham Library are all on fiche. Worcester RO on fiche from abt 1900. The 16mm films have a habit of falling off the reel and unravelling across the floor. Ros |

I intend to go to Birmingham Library and have already spent loads of time trying to unravel films as I always seem to get the machine that refuses to rewind!! Many thanks for your replies |
