Overseas Records on GRO Site

If at first you don't succeed in finding your ancestors in the Overseas Records Index, as I did, phone them up and ask them to search in their records books. I was looking for a marriage in Ireland for my great grandfather who was a soldier and married an Irish lady. Children of marriage showing on Index but not marriage. I was told that if it was not on the index they wouldn't have it and I needed the ref. numbers. BUT on the GRO site it states that if the records do not show, it is possible that they do have them, but you have to have a search done. I phoned them again today and got the stock answer, if it isn't on index we won't have it. So I persisted and explained to the very nice lady that the GRO site said they could have it and would she please do a search for me. Lo and behold - 2 hours later she came back to me to say that she had found a copy of the marriage in the Army Records books.!! It cost me £11.00 for search but I am a happy bunny after 7 years of trying to find this marriage. So, don't give in, keep asking. Margaret
