Can anyone suggest why in the 1860s someone who was unmarried could have 5 children and give the 3rd one up for adoption apparently very soon after birth. She brought children 1-3 and number 5 up on her own. It doesn't make sense to me. Any ideas please? Daisy

Was the one she gave up for adoption possibly disabled? Kate.
