I am about to buy more credits on 1837 but wondered if it would be more economical to subscribe to Ancestry. Any opinions would be welcome, to help me decide. MW

I do both. Can't do without Ancestry every time I get a new certificate I'm on there searching the Census's. But not everything is on there so also buy credits on 1837. I would subscribe to Ancestry and just buy £5 credits on 1837 when you need them. Linda

hi love, No Im afraid you need both. A few things are on ANCESTRY regarding GRO but not enough to do a full search. TED. ANCESTRY are brilliant for CENSUS returns.

I do both as well and have found since I joined Ancestry that I don't use half as many 1837 credits as I used to. Often you can find one part of the information on Ancestry eg the deaths usually give an age which narrows down your search for the birth on 1837 to just a couple of quarters. Di

Linda, Ted, Diane Thanks for your opinions. I have 1861 and 1871 census' (or is it censi - LOL) for the areas I need so I am trying to decide on the benefits of Ancestry. I rarely need 1901 as I have got much further back but it's possible 1901 and 1891 would be useful for tracing forwards. It's my birthday soon and I might ask my husband to buy me a subscription to Ancestry. MW

The BMD lookups on ancestry for 1837 onwards are free so you don't need to subscribe just to look at those, and in any case they are the same as on FreeBMD but a little bit behind. Ancestry is much better than 1837 online for census lookups though. Kate.
