Can anybody out there help? We know that our Gran was in prison -possibly in Liverpool aprox 1940. Is there any way that we can find out why/when /where other than local newspapers or at Kew? Any advice gratefully received ~ what had she been up to??? Thanks Ronnie |

Ronnie, Haven't got the faintest idea - but thought I'd give your question a quick push to the top again because I'd rather like to know what you're Granny was doing!! Good luck Jane |

Veronica Without wishing to cast aspersions on your family, it must have been pretty awful - there was a War on, you know! A bit of Black Marketeering, perhaps? Marjorie |

It depends on which court she was at and what she did. I know you can look through magistrate's court records as long as they are more than 30 years ago, as I did this to find out about my grandfather who was taken to court for maintenance payments when he left his wife. Gave me the date he deserted her, how much he was ordered to pay, and even the policeman's name who had to serve the order on him. The records should be kept at the local archives. Not sure about Crown Court records though. Kath. x |

Was your granny connected with farming? if so she could have been sent to prison for falsifying the milk or crop returns. Perhaps she got caught for buying/selling through the black market I remember having to listen for a certain knock on the door , then I had to open it just a little bit ,put my hand to get a parcel of meat .I had strict instructions that I musn't try and look at the person at the door I was about 5/6 at the time Bren |

Thanks everyone ~ It may well be something to do with the black market ~ i never thought of that. It couldn't have been too bad, as she didn't make the Times!, but there were a few brushes with the law on that side of the family. I will look at the sites recommended too; anything is worth a try, if I find out I will put it on the board Cheers Ronnie |
