I have a marriage (Dec Q 1883) in Camberwell between Thomas Goodson Spalton and Constance Jane Boyd-Smith. I have a death in June Q 1900 of Constance Jane B Spalton – aged 34 I have Constance J Spalton in the 1891 Census aged 29 (doesn’t match) b Birmingham I cannot find her birth, nor can I find her in the 1871 nor 1881 censuses What am I doing wrong? Morning Peter I have found this on 1871 which may explain why you could not find a birth record for Constance. Living Camberwell, St Giles but I'm still trying to read the address. Elizabeth A Mooles b1853 Overstone, Edingburgh Servant Mary Phillips b1799 Edingburgh, Scotland Mother Alice G Smith b1859 East India, Magpore Daughter Constance B Smith b1864 East India, Magpore Daughter Edward C Smith b1866 Gravesend, Kent, England Son Elsie F Smith b1862 East India, Magpore Daughter Emily A Smith b1851 East India, Magpore Daughter Emma Smith b1834 East India, Magpore Wife Emma G Smith b1854 East India, Magpore Daughter Henry Smith b1821 London, England Head Hope this helps Sue |

Thanks Sue, She is a bit obscure as she married my great grand uncle and I was hoping to solve the mystery without buying the marriage cert! Your Indian lot look interesting, but 1891 definitely has Birmingham as place of birth, and my two sources put date of birth at either 1861 0r 1866. Looks as though I have to keep looking (or buying cert...why do I really need to know her parents???) lol Peter |

Constance shows up on a Google search but there's no extra information. I think you need her marriage certificate to obtain a few more details on her. Some of my folk have been shown with vastly differing places of birth but other evidence has shown them to be the right people. With a marriage certificate, you might be able to establish whether she is likely to be the India-born person. Witnesses might help too. |

Peter Is it worth looking for a Boyd-Smith marriage around 1860? Keith |
