Lib, Maureen and Trudy, Thanks for your suggestions. I thought about civil servant but I thought it would just say that on the cert. Kay, Only know of 1 child, my great great grandmother, Emma Pickerill, and she was born in 1820, before birth certs. Helen, Her father, Joseph Pickerill, died about 1839 before she married in 1848, although her marriage cert doesn't say he is deceased. So, I miss out on the census records too. I don't know where else to look. Guess it will just remain a mystery. Thanks Rose

I don't know if this makes any difference about the nature of the occupation but the year is 1848. Rose

On my great great grandmother's marriage certificate, it has her father's occupation as ' In Her Majesty's Service'. Would that mean he is in the military? If he was I would think it would state soldier or Royal Navy. They lived in the Birmingham area so he wouldn't have been part of the Royal household. Any ideas? Rose
