Hi, can anyone tell me the best place to order copies of birth/marriage certificates. Reading up it seems that I can order from GRO or Local Registrars Office but I have read (in a PRO handbook) that I need to be aware that the references in GRO's indexes dont relate to the locally held registers?? (Not quite sure which type of reference is which!) I have an actual date of birth for one that I would like to have, so whats best in that instance?? Also is it better to apply for copies in writing, by phone or over the net?? (dont get many opportunities to travel to these offices during their opening hours) Would be grateful for any advice on this subject!! Thanks & bifn Josie |

If you know the GRO reference - where did you get the ref on 1837 or familyrelatives or freebmd - then you can order easily on line at the GRO for £7 a certificate. Its very straight forward and the delivery time is apparently less than a week at the moment. If you dont have that reference but know the dates etc. you will find it better to perhaps phone the office local to the event to order it. |

Thanks Kirsty and 'Totally Confused' - seems I have 3 options then...... I was going to use GRO but I got the references from Freebmd, thats when I got concerned about the references I would need to quote, my references District: Dunmow Vol 4a Page 853 come from Freebmd. Is that the refs I should quote if I go via GRO?? thanks Josie |

Thanks Jacqui, I will go ahead now. Why does it make me so nervous going for each of these 'family history' experiences the 1st time!! - The worst that can happen is that I get the wrong certificate I guess..... Thanks again Josie |

Josephine If you have other details you can use as checking points, you can ask GRO to check for you. Then they refund half the cost of the cert if its not the right one. nell |

Hi Nell, what other kind of details?? The actual place of birth, or a parents name? I have both of those... is that the kind of detail you mean? Thanks for the tip about half refund if not the right one. bifn Josie |

There is a catch though, you have to pay them to check! So if you are really sure you have the right names and place then just fill in the form pay your seven quid and wait in excited anticipation! |
