Writing envelopes

I was in two minds yesterday whether to have a cert from FRC posted to me. I addressed an envelope, indenting each line. When I reached the counter (but not clearly visible next to the envelopes) was a sign to the effect that: Addresses lined up straight down the envelope can be sorted by machine, so the post reaches you more quickly than diagonal addresses, which have to be manually sorted. At this point, I asked to collect the certificate! But has anyone heard of this before? FRC is probably the one place where I do address an envelope in this way, but I'll stop indenting in future!

Hi Brenda No I've never heard of that. Mind you I always do it Block style as when I was learning to type, we were told that was the way it would be done in the future. Something similar though. I went into the bank with a cheque made out to cash for wages. Can't remember the exact amount but it was about £2,000.00. I was asked to write the cheque out again but without the comma in the amount as the machine would process the comma as a digit. Flippin' machines, eh? Jeanette x

I think they've been using machines in sorting offices for yonks - but I thought the machine just sorted using the postcode, which is why it should be the last line of the addy. nell
