Hi, I am looking for Richard fagg. The rest of his family (13 siblings) were born in Burmarsh btw 1771 & 1793...found them on Family Search. But couldn't find Richard. On 1861 census there are 2 Richard Faggs born 1792. One was born Elham & the other was born Eastbridge. Is one place more obvious than the other to be close to Burmarsh ??? Thanks

Hi Karen I've had a look in my map book, Elham is about 10/15 miles away from Burmash, but I couldnt find an Eastbridge listed. Karen

Cant trace Eastbridge as being Kent - there is one in Devon. As for Elham it is few miles north of Folkstone while Burmarsh is same distance west of Folkstone. Burmarsh was in the Romney Marsh Registration District and Elham was a Reg Dist in its own right - both are now in Ashford & Sheppey Reg Dist.

Thanks Karen & Joe. It does say Eastbridge Kent as place of birth on census. Must be a mistake. I'll go with the Elham Richard then. Thanks again PS ..Just had a look at the image & it has East Bridge as 2 words. Does that make a difference???

No difference and just had a look at old-maps site and only one they got is Suffolk. There is a place Bridge in Kent but that is miles away - on the London road from Canterbury but too small to be East West etc.,

Hi Karen I've just had a look on the 1841 Census for Kent and have found Eastbridge listed as one of the Parishes. the parish is listed in the Registrar's District of Romney Marsh, but I can't make out any other information from it. Have you tried Google? I came up with the Eastbridge hospital in Canterbury, but couldn't find very much else about the place itself.

Google-ing Eastbridge brings up the Hospital in Canterbury most of the time - and that is far away from Burmarsh - I spent too long in that place ! On the other hand it does appear to be in Dymchurch, West Hythe area - I have done an 1881 Census look at Census place England, Kent, Eastbridge and it comes up with a total of 54 names ONLY - that is 10 Households and the NEXT is Burmarsh ! Still No trace on the current map - or the older one for that matter.

Hi Karen, Eastbridge was nr Burmarsh. There is still an Eastbridge rd going off the main Hythe to Hastings rd, but the village is no more. I think. Bridge is the next village on from Elham on the way to Canterbury and as someone has already said Elham was a registration district so covered a lot of places. Hope this helps a bit. Magsxx

Karen Please don't go with the Elham one! I will get back to the library and check out some more parish records for you when I can. You wouldn't believe how many FAGGs live round and about this area, even today! Although Elham is a small village, it did later give it's name to the large Registration District of that name.
