I have been trying to contact another member who I believe has a close member of my family in his family tree. Unfortunately for whatever reason he has not replied so I am stuck. It is the best lead that I have and receiving no answers is very frustrating. I wonder if anyone can give me any advice on what to do next. I am very new to searching for ancestors.

Sometimes members change their email address without letting Genes know, in which case it depends on whether or not the member logs on to Genes regularly or not, to find your message. Some people only log on very occasionally. All you can do is wait and see. I have tried to contact some people about names I'm sure we share but have heard nothing from them, whereas others respond straight away. Kath. x

Hi Kathleen Thanks for your reply. I'll just have to hope that he logs in soon.

People being new to family history and the Internet can be both a strength and weakness of GenesReunited. It gives you chance to make contact with people who are new to family history and have never heard of the very active mailing lists, message boards and FHS. But many of these seem to sign up for GenesReunited in a burst of enthusiasm then lose interest or hardly ever log on to the Internet. I seem to remember that your message used to be forwarded to them rather than a link to the Message area - I find this inconvenient as I often download my mail away from hom then read later. I wonder if GenesReunited monitor for bouncing EMail addresses? It would help if they could indicate that EMail to a user was bouncing though probably often it is just never downloaded. MB

Does a message always get sent to the registered email address?? I sent an email via friendsreunited about 6 months ago. I got a reply this week (so pleased!!) but he said that he only found the message when he logged onto FR, and nothing had been sent to his own address. Similarly, people have sent me messages here on GR, and I don't get notification of it - only when I log on. Liz

'I think it should be made more explicit that you can reply to messages without being a full member as I'm sure there must be others who don't realise.' That is something that GenesReunited should perhaps make clearer on the message system? MB

Liz, You should get an email from Genes saying ' you have a message from '........' with the name of the person. It then usually says 'click to read the message' and that opens up Genes website for you. If you don't ever get an email about messages, then maybe Genes don't have your current email address. Kath. x
