Oh dear, you must feel gutted. I had a similar thing happen recently but somehow it all came back on its own. But I rang a shop and the guy said that he could remove the hard disc or something and put it in another machine and then save the info?

Thanks, I is so frustrating because I know I won't sleep want to go to a shop now and see if I can get it back. I am really really worried. Thanks anyway Zoe

Zoe - it will almost certainly be recoverable - BUT GET IT TO AN EXPERT. And when you get it back - make sure you do backups!! ((((hug)))) Peter (in NZ)

Zoe.... Blue screen usually means your hard drive has crashed......which will need to be replaced. David is right, a reputable company may be able to retrieve some, if not all of your information.....but it can be quite expensive. Your trying to fix it with the disk wouldn't have made a difference....when the hard drive crashes it's just time to replace it. I have two hard drives installed on my PC.....I copy everything I want to save from one hard drive to the other so that if one hard drive crashes I have a back-up on hand....I also back up important items to disk. Yes, backup is essential, ideally away from the machine. Burn to a disk or put on a memory stick. I e-mail essential files to work and keep a copy on my office computer.

When it happened to me, the chap said I should buy one of these 'pen drives'? to back it all on to. He reckoned about £15?

Hi, I am back on my pc now with no files. I have some info on this site about my tree and also papers. I will live and learn backup, backup, backup. Thanks to everyone Zoe :)

Zoe Easiest way to backup essential files is to email them to your husband and get him to save them on his PC - that way you have them in two places. Peter
