A couple of months ago at work (in my local library) i was talking to a old gentleman about the East End had how hard it is to find places that no longer exsists,He told me he was from the East End and he knew of a few streets i mentioned. A coulpe of days later he went in when i was'nt working and left a book for me, it had been in his family from new it was London in 1909 a guide to London,a lovely old book full of detail about how much hotels tariffs were, how much certain restaurants charged for example at the Adelphi the Strand a table d'hote luncheon was 2/6d. how much a taxi ride was and it has beautiful maps, He trusted this book to me because he knew how much i would love and look after it. I feel so gratefull and it was such a nice gesture from a total stranger, and such an interesting book needs to be kept for historical facts,i will certainly look after it |

Wow, that's amazing. How lovely for you, and the book, and the man to have been so thoughtful. Thanks for posting that. :-)))) Jen (bookworm) |

When my aunt moved house, a few years back, she gave me a pre-war Baedeker. This has proved invaluable. The street maps helped me locate ancestors on censuses and the descriptions were fascinating. Occasionally, it has let me down. Looking for the oldest window in York Minster - a tree of Jesse - the window confronting me was plainly NOT a family tree. I had to buy a modern guide book to discover that the window had been moved.... in the early 1950s! |
