International Genealogical Index. No burials (allegedly) but lots of baptisms and marriages. Google family search for the site. |

Yvonne The International Genealogical Index is mainly baptisms and marriages in C of E churches, though it does include some burials and also some non-conformist records. It's available on www.familysearch.org You may also find it useful to go to Hugh Wallis's site (google 'Hugh Wallis batch numbers'). You can then choose a county, and a town/parish and see which areas are covered for when. The batch numbers beside the parish churches are C (for christenings) or M for marriages. You can click on these and a separate window opens. Press search to see the complete list, or put in a surname to look on that. This will then take you to the familysearch site and list all the baptisms or marriages on the batch. If its a baptism you can click and search all the children baptised in that area to the same parents. nell |

I forgot to add , that the IGI is only a finding aid and must not be taken as fact. The relevant parish records must then be sought. |

The IGI also includes 'Members' Submissions'. Be very wary of these as they can be unreliable. They submitted by member's of the LDS who are tracing their ancestry so all their ancestors can be baptised. Some are very optimistic in tracing their family tree. The entries from parish records are as reliable as any transcribed records but unfortunately the LDS will not correct errors - one of my family is incorrectly transcribed but they will not correct it (I have checked the film of the original register). A very good way to search the IGI is by the Batch Number which can identify a particular church. Often searching for a particular surname and Batch Number will show the whole family over many years. An easy way to do this is at this website (I hope URL survives GenesConnected's deliberate corruption!) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.*com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#Page REMOVE STAR MB |
