I'm tracing a Thomas Harrison born in c1835 Reepham/Fiskerton Lincs who was married to Amelia Fisher born 1840 London. I know they moved to Sheffield, they're on the 1861 census. We were looking for their marriage and Found one with both names in Retford Nottinghamshire. After asking the registrar for the area we were told they needed more than the vol and page numbers, we needed to know the church where they were married. So we sent to the GRO and they said there was no such marriage. We thought they must've been married around 1859. Any ideas on where to look now?

I would phone the GRO back and tell them that the marriage is in the indexes so they should be able to find it. I've just looked on 1837online and the two names both appear with the same registration details:- June qtr. 1859, E. Retford, 7b, 51. Kath. x p.s. the East Retford register office should only need the two names, (or even only one name) and the quarter and year.
