Have you looked at the Australian databases to see if they can offer any clues? eg http://proarchives.imagineering.*com.au (remove *) Unassisted Immigration to Victoria Index of Inward Passenger Lists for British, Foreign and New Zealand Ports 1852-1923 Family Name First Name Age Month Year Ship Port Fiche Page HOWARTH JOHN A JAN 1853 CONDOR B 027 003 They also have: VPRS 110/P0 Register of Convicts, c1838-1852 but you have to navigate the images yourself. You can also view the images of VPRS 10867 P0 Alphabetical Index to Central Register of Male Prisoners (VA 1464) Penal and Gaols Branch, Chief Secretary's Department online, but 'alphabetical' is relative - it's just the first initial of the surname, after that it could be anywhere within H! This might be useful: http://www.nla.gov.au/pathways/jnls/newsite/browse/geoghist.html I know you're looking for stuff in UK, but there may be clues in the Australian records. Christine |

You get a lot of hits on A2A if you put 'John Howarth' into the search box and specify NW England. The first lot are all Salford - i.e. v close to Manchester. May not all be the same person, of course. The problem is that there are refs to a John Howarth being prosecuted after your cut-off date. There are also refs to a John Howarth who was a Constable. Here's an example opf a promising one: LANCASHIRE COUNTY QUARTER SESSIONS Catalogue Ref. Q Creator(s): Lancashire Quarter Sessions PETITIONS Salford: Easter 1841 - ref. QSP/3147 FILE - Deposition: Information of John Howarth of Manchester, warehouseman, re whereabouts of Herman Korhammer, witness in above case against Joseph Tootal and others - ref. QSP/3147/251 - date: 1841 12 Apr Christine |

I had a look under 'John Howarth' on the Docs Online site. http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk Do you think this might be relevant? If court records from 1837 have survied you will need to know where he was convicted as it may not have been in the County of Lancashire. Manchester Quarter Sessions were not granted untill 1st April 1839.Prior to that Manchester crimes were dealt with by Lancashire Quarter Sessions. Ged |

I would like any information about the marriage and family of John and Maria Howarth. Know child John Hanson Howarth born 1815, his Australian death certificate says he was born in Manchester. He came to Australia c1852 as he married here in 1853. Thanks Vickie |
