Hi All, I am curious to know what information is recorded on UK death and marriage certificates. I live in Australia and I have applied for a few UK birth certificates and know what to expect, however due to a 'mysterious' marriage that I have now found out about I would like to know what is recorded on a UK marriage and death cert? I have heard they are a little different to our marriage certs in that both parents are generally listed, and therefore if I order one online I want to be sure the information I am after will be recorded...sorry if its confusing. Also on a death certificate, does it list all prior names ? ie maiden name and 1st married name? Thanks Michelle |

You only get the father's names on a marriage certificate plus occupations and the address at time of marriage Death certs will give Name of Deceased Where they died Age at death and their occupation What they died of Name and address of informant Name of parents if a child under 16 I haven't actually got any for any married women so can't answer the last part! Michelle MARRIAGE CERTS Date and place of wedding; groom's name, age, address and occupation; ditto for bride [but please note that in older certs certainly pre-1900s, the age is often just 'of full age' and bride's ocupation is hardly ever given]; father of groom's name and occupation; ditto bride [unless either is illegitimate]. Marriage cert will also state whether bride/groom is a spinster/bachelor of widow/widower. Bride's maiden name is given if she is spinster, if not, it will give her 1st married name plus her maiden name. DEATH CERTS Date and place of death; name of dead person and their occupation [if before 1969 it will give a woman's husband's occupation, even if he is dead]; cause of death; informant of death. For more info about what is on certs and what it means I refer you to the excellent site: http://home*.clara*.net/dixons/Certificates/indexbd.*htm remove * to use. nell |
