Hi I have just received a marriage certificate of my son's friend grandad who was adopted. The name of father and occupation are blank? I thought that if you were adopted on all other records (except original birth) you would take your adoptive father's name etc? Can someone advise, maybe his grandad wasnt adopted after all but didnt know his real father's name? I have looked for a birth to correspond with his age and I have found one possibility but only because the area is close to his marriage. Any advice on this would be very much appreciated. Thanks Bridget

When you get married the registrar asks the bride & groom for details. Clearly the groom didn't give any details, perhaps because he didn't know who his father was. you don't say when this took place, but formal adoption has only existed since 1927. nell

it sounds more as though he didn't know his fathers name. If you were to apply for his birth cert unfortunately (for the purpose of this exercise) his birth cert will be no good to you - in a clarification sense- because it will be his post adoption one that will be issued. A pre-adoption one states adopted not the re-issue. Probably just confused you! jess x
