Gloria and Sherlock The papers referred to on A2A are held by Chester and Cheshire Archives and Local Studies Centre - is that the same thing as the County Records Office? (Where I live, those are two different things, in two different buildings....). According to A2A, other papers relating to Clonterb rook Estate have been returned to the Depositor, Messrs Charlton and Co, Solicitors of Congleton (some very old stuff indeed, dated 1400s) If Sherlock is going sleuthing for you, he might like the reference number of the 1700 stuff, which is DCB/1595/33/26 1715-1783, loose deeds. I too have little faith in Coats of Arms - my Ancestral Family has a basic coat of Arms, which has been interpreted by various august bodies in at least three different ways - 5 Moorcocks 5 Moorhens 5 Eaglets It seems fairly obvious to me that they are Moorcocks - my ancestors were Cock of the Moors in more ways than one, tee hee. Happy hunting Marjorie |

Thank you all for the help, think you might be right about the american site and the heraldry. Sherlock, I live in Lancashire but don't get anywhere near Chester except for the odd day out and then my financial director (husband) is with me. If you could have a prod and poke for it that would be great, and if you ever need anything from the Preston Records Office let me know and I will bob in for you. |

Best starting place for any information on family history is GENUKI. Go to the Cheshire section and there will be a link to a list of towns and villages in Cheshire. See if any look like possible matches. You can look up any English place name at http://www.gazetteer.*co.uk REMOVE STAR I think someone else has warned to wary about coats of arms. You often see messages about someone finding the coat of arms for a particular surname. It is basically the property of one person and not available for anyone else to use. There might be several coats of arms assigned to different people with the same surname. There is more information on the College of Arms website. http://www.*college-of-arms.*gov.*uk/Faq.htm MB |

The Locketts (various spellings) were Lords of the Manor in Clouterbrook and granted lands after they distinguished themselves at the Battle of Hastings 1066. |
