Does anyone subscribe to the above??? I've found a possible lead on one, but it looks a bit complicated to subcribe to them!!! its probably not and it's just me!!! LOL Sarah xxx

Not complicated, honest. Happy to help if you want. That's where I've found loads of help. Joy

I'm subscribed to loads of them but haven't had any luck with them, a lot of them are mainly full of people researching in America. I live in hope though... It's not too complicated to subscribe and there are instructions on the site, the popular ones fill up your inbox a bit fast though if you don't check your e-mail regularly enough! (So if that's the case make sure you subscribe in 'digest mode')

Cheers Joy What's the diffrence between 'd' and 'l' ??? Sarah xxx

Elizabeth

Elizabeth Report 11 May 2005 16:14

'L' will send every individual message in a separate e-mail as soon as it is posted to the list. 'D' (digest) sends you less e-mails, but each one contains several messages.

d is the digest form where you get lots of messages posted to the list within one email - which is what we have (otherwise we'd have tooooo many emails to read!!). l is when you receive every message posted to the list individually. currently we subscribe to the Cornish ones, Buckinghamshire and Suffolk. Have also been on London, Surrey, Kent, Dublin ..... etc! Joy

Yes definitely worth subscribing to.

They vary but most are very useful and have helpful people on them. There are now lists for some individual towns rather than just counties. Read the instructions before subscribing. Subscribers get annoyed to get messages sent over the list from people wanting to unsubscribe but have not bothered to read the instructions on how to unsubscribe. With many lists you will get dozens of messages per day. If you subscribe to the digest then trim any replies sent to the list i.e. don't quote the whole message. All common sense but unfortunately many people seem to be short of it! Read messages for a few days before posting requests for help so you get a feel for the sort of things carried on the list. MB

You should be able to go to the page for that list on ROOTSWEB. There will be something like this (from the Bolton list) # Unsubscribing. To leave ENG-XXX-XXXXXX-L, send mail to [email protected] with the single word unsubscribe in the message subject and body. To leave ENG-XXX-XXXXXX-D, do the same thing with [email protected]. * Unsubscribe from ENG-XXX-XXXXXX-L * Unsubscribe from ENG-XXX-XXXXXX-D (digest) Clicking on unsubscribe will open a new message which you can send. Normally there should just be 'UNSUBSCRIBE' in the Subject field and nothing else. If that does not work then there will be an address for the list administrator at the top of the page. Send a message to him/her direct and they should be able to remove you from the list. For questions about this list, contact the list administrator at ENG-XXX-XXXXXX-admin {AT} rxxtsweb.xxx. (sorry the usual GenesREunited deliberate policy of corrupting addresses messed that up but the address is not important.) I can't remember having any problems, I have a list of addresses stored in OUTLOOK so I can unsubscribe messages to a whole list of mailing lists when I am going on holiday then subscribe again when I return - all done from one message with multiple addresses in the 'To' field.
