If a man was declared lost at sea in 1870, would he be issued with a death certificate? Also, would a grave be allocated to him if there were no body, so to speak?

Hi, I've not found a death reference for my lost at sea gt gt grandfather John. I know there are some records at Kew for those lost at sea. I can answer the other question though, those lost at sea are remembered on the graves of family members. I've seen a lot of these. The MI on gt gt grandmother's grave has her dates then it says 'also sacred to the Memory of ..... lost in the great storm.....' Gwynne

My GGG Grandfather was lost in 1880 from SS Lisvane, the ship went down with a loss of 14 lives and 12 saved off Ushant France, I got his death certificate after looking at 1837 Online and then sending for it, they have a section for marine B,M,D's , I also found out more info by going through the newspapers in my local libary and the local record office were able to supply me with copies of the crew agreements, the only thing I have not found is a board of trade enquiry into the sinking and if any of the people that were lost if they were found and buried, hope this helps.
