Marriages on Ancestry

Can someone tell me why, when looking for marriages, you click on the page number to see everyone whos on that page, why sometimes there is an odd number of people? I always thought, for example if there are 4 people, 2 brides and 2 grooms, that makes 2 married couples. So what happens if there are 5 names listed? Has one gone missing, is it a mistake in transcription, or would they be on another page? Thanks Lisa

The transcriptions aren't complete. The pages are done one by one, and by several different people. There is a possibility that the extra person might be on FreeBMD, but they might not be there either. Ancestry takes all its BMD details from there, but is slightly behind.

Lisa, I've wondered the same for years. I think it has something to do with the transcription process as some times one of a couple is duplicated e.g. Jane Smith might also by shown as Jayne Smyth. I assume that the original record would show both spellings so it was indexed twice. Also most early indexes were hand written so if the handwritting was very bad an entry could have been missed out. The index on FreeBMD and Ancestry (same data) has not been fully transcribed so the missing partener could be on part of the index that is still to be transcribed.
