Have you found Eliza's birth yet, that will give her mothers maiden name also her fathers full name. Another thing if you can't find her under the name given in census try all the others as well. We had a John Albert Simpkins on census 91 & 1901 could not find his birth. Took some working out but his mother was a Dancy, he was born before his parents were married, he was named Albert John Dancy. What made it harder was the mother died within a couple of year and father married again. Irene

Father-in-law could mean step-father, or her father-in-law could have been widowed and then married again, which would give him a different name to his daughter-in-law. Kath. x

Maria is listed as widowed on the 1861, so I assume that ROMAIN is her married name. She was born 1816 and daughter Eliza ROMAIN was born 1848 so maybe he marriage to Mr ROMAIN was a second marriage.

While trying to find my g grandmother`s parents who never seem to be together on any census, I tried to work on another side of the family in the hope of finding them. First, on the 1901 census I have g grandparents James FLEW and Annie FLEW (formerly ELLIS) and children, plus a Frank EARLEY listed as cousin. I have Frank on the 1891 with parents George EARLEY and Eliza, and have found their marriage in 1866 Elizas maiden name ROMAIN Going back further I have Eliza ROMAIN on the 1861 with mother Maria ROMAIN as Head. Also listed is a James ELLIS stated as father in law. Other ELLISs listed are a sister in law, a niece and a nephew. My problem now is, how can Maria ROMAIN have a father in law with a different surname, or have I missed something.
