FAQ Board

That's not exactly what I mean. I know you don't mind helping them, this site is about helping them that is correct. My point being GR should have a section more prominent for a FAQ. If not these boards are going to be clogged with those questions (especially on the Records Office board). Some people posting haven't thought too much about what they are posting, and haven't really checked a FAQ or the getting started sections in GR (not the fault of them, it is out of sight to some degree). An example posted - 'Where can I get Parish records?', possibly if they had read the getting started section (if they found it or thought to use it) then they really wouldn't be asking like they have 100% no clue about it. So this suggests there isn't thought into some peoples posts. And it's about a common subject like Parish Records too. If it was more obscure, like WW1 medals, then I could understand. Just a though, not exactly a gripe or moan Steve

I tend to disagree a bit, and think that by asking a question a person has actually thought about what it is they want to know and then are more likely to retain that info. Isn't this site about helping each other anyway? Maybe some people, especially newbies want a bit of support and reassurance too, and I for one don't mind helping them if I can. Jess

It's not quite the same as the boards though is it? I think a proper BOARD for people to post questions that are asked regularly would be a very good idea Steve. Lyn

100% true. Not that I'm having a go at people posting these messages (they can't help it, online genealogy is probably new to them and they're excited! No doubt) but I wish it would leave the tips board free for questions and enquires. Alot of people have to repeat what they have said day after day countless times. The FAQ sections needs more focus, maybe a tab of its own, maybe the success section should be moved and replaced by the FAQ/Getting started section. Just an observation. Not exactly a complaint or gripe. Steve

I think it would be useful to have a section for resources, which people can add sites to as reference. For instance, adoptees, Scottish, Irish..... It will then leave more space for specific questions on the tips board. There will also be a useful resource for newbies starting out!! (Like me!!!) Liz (Not sure if I made my suggestion clear enough there?!!)

Steve, When I read your thread I thought 'WHAT A GOOD IDEA !' - You are so right - It would answer a lot of questions. Then I read Nells message and went and had a look. Certainly, I have been on this site (I have to admit) EVERY day since I jouned in January and I have never noticed it. As Nell says, it should be in a more prominent position, not hidden away. Dea x

Steve There is a FAQ board and also a getting started board. The problem with both is that they are buried - you have to know they are there to find them. I have e-mailed GR several times to suggest they make them more prominent. They are of more use to more people than silly 'facts' about how many people called Winston Churchill are on the census, etc! nell

Does anyone think a FAQ board would be useful to anyone? I always see people posting the same messages over and over for the same things. There should be a section dedicated for this.
