I absolutely cannot find Chrles Pearce father of William. Of course I have virtually nothing to go on but, this is what I plan to do -WILL IT WORK? I know that when Charles' son William got married in 1855, he put his father as a bricklayer. He did not put deceased so can I assume Charles was still alive? William claims on various censuses to be born in 1, Essex, 2 Bentley Heath Essex, 3 LOndon. THis would be abt 1831/2 If as 1837 online put more and more counties census for 1861, I can search for all the Charles Pearces. I have done this with all those available so far and found one Charles Pearce bricklayer in London. Could this be him? I could short list all Charles Pearces. If none seem to fit the bill I can assume he died between 1855 (sons marriage )and 1861 census. Now is this feasible do you think or have I missed something or is it too wild for words? Chris Some of my relatives have fathers who are dead, but not listed as 'deceased' on their wedding certs, but generally if they are not recorded dead they are still alive. Your plan sounds good, if a bit time-consuming. Have you checked Freebmd for likely deaths of charles Pearce in the right area? Do you know the wife's name - could you find her death cert and see if she is listed as wife or widow on it? nell

THanks Helen little Nell. I don't know the wife's name, its so frustrating. I have looked on freeBMD for Charles Pearce deaths but not really knowing which area its all so hit and miss. No trace of Charles in Land Tax records Bentley Heath, no sign of Williams baptism in the local parish church. Should I give up? CHris

Dear 'Chrispy', If I were you I would search the 1841 and perhaps 1851 census of Bentley Heath in the hope of finding Charles when he was living with his parents (although the 1841 doesn't give as much info about each person as the other years, hopefully it will give you something to go on). If you can't find them you might have to wait for a name index of those years to be available and then try to find the family. Kate.

Thanks Kate for suggestion but Bentley Heath was not in Essex as William claimed, it was in Middlesex and is now in Herts (the plot thickens!) Various wonderful GR people have trawled through the Essex, Herts and even Suffolk 1841 census and have not found Charles with William a glaring ommission here seems to be Middlesex. Have I forgot it? soI am at my wits end and going to try my strategy when I get more energy! Thanks chris All ideas welcome!!
