Joanne

Joanne Report 9 May 2005 11:03

I'm researching an unusual surname, in most of the censuses around this area (small part of Lancashire) any of the people with that surname belong to me. I checked the phone book and there is one person who lives in the area with that surname. My mum said I should write out that part of the family tree and write him/her a letter. Good idea or bad idea?

Hi Joanne, I think that's a good idea. Even if they aren't related, they shouldn't mind you writing to them. At worst, they won't reply and at best, you make contact with some relations. Go for it! Sam x

I have done it with my family. Always apologise for bothering them, and always include a stamped addressed envelope. I also include my telephone number and email address, because a lot of people will give you a call or send an email, whereas they don't always like to go to the trouble of writing a letter. I have had replies from quite a few queries, so I'd say go ahead, you've got nothing but a couple of stamps to lose. Kath. x

Well I wrote and posted the letter yesterday and got a phone call last night! Apparantly some of the names and dates she knows match with mine and I'm going round on Thursday! However my boyfriend now thinks I'm even more weird because I get so excited about dead people. I went up to one of the local graveyards today - found out loads of info! Just waiting on these certs now!
