I have found an ancestor who was in the 108th Royal Hussars based at Ipswich in the 1861 census. Would I be able to find out any more details of his army service that far back so I wondered what war that would be about 1861n. I have looked up Boer, Napolean, Crimean wars and the dates do not match????? Any ideas Irene

Lots of sites if you google 'Royal Hussars' but mainly about the 10th. Nothing in the research guide index on The National Archives. nell

The American civil war was 1861-5, but he's unlikely to have been involved with that! More likely he was just out there defending the Empire for Queen & country... My GG-grandfather was in the 18th Hussars from 1858 until his death in 1871. He died in India, of cholera. We found his enlistment & also found him on the muster rolls for his regiment, which were at Kew. Richard

Thank you both for all your information. He did not die in the war and is found in a later census no longer in the army. I will look at the records at Kew when I get a chance to visit there again. Thanks again Irene

Hi Irene, try this website www.regiments.org, I've just taken a quick look and it lists the regiment you are looking for including history and lineage. It may be of some use, happy hunting. Karen
