Can some kind people help me i am looking for surname variations of the surname Chippendale. This my next attempt to find william chippendale in the 1861 census. I hope some kind people can help.

Melvyn I have found that capital letters at the beginnings of names can be transcribed as almost any other letter, so for example I have M became T S became T S became L J became D P became C Have you tried looking using first name, age and place of birth? nell

thanks for the advice Helen, i have just tried it but no luck, i am coming to the conclusion that he is not on the 1861 census

Melvyn It's a pity his first name is so common. I have found with censuses that people generally are there, its just a problem finding them. If you are searching on 1837online, I have found relatives on it by doing address searches or looking for other family members. Sometimes the person is on the census/transcription, but for some reason not in the index! nell

who did the family comprise of in 1871?

Does he have a middle name, as he maybe using that. Also I found someone transcribed as being born abt 1889 when they were born in 1901 but were put as 7/12 (7 months old) on census and so I think the transcriber didn't know what it meant. AL

The family in 1861 is as follows William sharples/chipendale mary chippendale margaret chippendale jane ann chippendale william chippendale they are all born in clayton le moors apart from mary who was born in rishton

Where does Sharples come into it? birth years? Cos i aint going to look thru every Mary alive!! Where were they and where might they be?
