Software is useful for backing up your tree, so if anything happens you have more than one copy. It is also good for inter-linking families, which is something I find happens a lot lol LDS has Personal Ancestral File (PAF) which is free to use... can be downloaded from http://www.familysearch.org/eng/paf/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Family Tree Maker Details at http://www.familytreemaker(.)com/ Can be bought from most stores selling software, or online. No trial version. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Legacy Family Tree Details at http://www.legacyfamilytree(.)com/ The standard version is free. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- GenoPro Details at http://www.genopro(.)com/ Free to use standard version. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- GreatFamily Details at http://www.greatprogs(.)com/ Shareware version available to download. Trial lasts for 30 days. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Family Tree Legends Details at http://www.familytreelegends(.)com/ Available to buy online. No trial version. 30 day money-back guarantee.

I've recently downloaded PAF 5 from the LDS site. I was able to transfer info from my GR file to it with no problems and have just started another tree for my husband on PAF. It is free, easy to use, lots of context-friendly help. I may well get a more sophisiticated version later, but using GEDCOM should be able to transfer info easily. You could have a look in WHSmiths, they have a range of family history software packages. They also stock family history magazines, which have regular reviews of software and tips on how to use them, etc. nell

After getting input from other GR members, I opted for the latest version of Family Tree Maker. It's really good - for both beginners and those more experienced at genealogy. It produces some excellent reports and I set up my own webpage in no time at all. Mandy :)

For all you Apple Mac users out there the package to use is: REUNION 8 Don't be tempted to use Mac Tree it's no where near as much fun and it can't do all those extra bits and bobs that reunion can. Audio and visual media can be used, images of documents and people can be stored, importing and exporting of info, time lines and charts done for you . Best bit of kit I assure you . Much happiness Debi
