Don't hold your breath, Margaret. Some birth registrations may not have reached the GRO, but it is much more likely that registration did not take place. I have a single missing death registration in my family: 1840, but probably a dozen missing births. This is completely unscientific, but suggests an under-registration of births, rather than registrar error. Do you have older/younger children whose certs you can obtain? You really need both to ensure the husband didn't have a second wife with the same christian name, but it's worth looking. |

Have you tried at the registry office in Sussex, incase a registration didn't make it to the master GRO list but is logged at local office? |

OR, they didn't register the birth. It does happen! My great grandmother's birth (along with all her siblings) was never registered (this is about 1885) in Ireland (North). I think this was even after the time it was made compulsory too. I only know her d.o.b because I know where she was born and have looked at the parish records! Wish you all the luck in the world. I have looked on Ancestry and 1837online for Ruff, Ruffe and even Rough, but can't find the birth. As this was early on in registration, and it wasn't compulsory at that time, perhaps he was not registered. Kath. x |
