The best way I have found is tracing wills. Often the will gives full names, relationship to the deceased, occupation, address etc. so do have a look and see if you can find any. Kate.

Is it a bird? is it a plane?

Is it a bird? is it a plane? Report 2 May 2005 10:26

To be honest 100% verification is hard to achieve. I'm not entirely sure I would be happy saying that any of my bits and pieces match up 100%. I tend to think of family history research as a 'best fit' kind of scenario. We're dealing with people, and people forget, lie, don't know, make assumptions, are hard of hearing, mumble, don't know how to read or write, have strong accents etc etc. Therefore records of any sort are not always accurate and as family historians we have to accept a little le-way (sp?) when it comes to the facts. What I tend to do is weigh up the most likely scenario to determine if the certificate/census/parish record I have is likely to fit in with what I know. If 80% of the information on the record fits with what I already know then I take it that its likely I have the right information. If I'm not sure I often use the new record to do some searching to see if there are any other possible people it could refer to. Sorry its all a bit vague!

sometimes you end up with a pile of peices,as in a jigsaw, that you think fit- but dont until you find the piece that links them. As the piece grow hopefully they will either butt up, crash hopelessly or fit. try from another angle or line jess

Can anyone advise me on how to verify the person you,ve found say e.g. from a birth cert you've sent for is correct. If you can't find a marriage cert or have no idea when the person died. This has been the biggest problem I've encountered in the search for my Dads family, and I'm also finding that lots of the info on census returns e. g. dob and also spelling of hand written entries on birth certs can often be wrong making the process even more of an emotional roller coaster ride and an alltogether more time consuming exercise. Hoping you might be able to suggest some ideas. kindest regards Christine
