what was going on in india around 1875ish?

can anyone help....im researching my family and the whole family come from northamptonshire and 5 of the children, the father and mother were born in northamptonshire but 2 of the children were born in india one in 1875 and one in 1877 ....can anyone tell me why they think they were ??? thanks

Hi, If you google India and 1875 you will get a lot of hits. There were a lot of British commercial companies around plus the army trying to keep down the locals. Gwynne

Yes in all likelihood the father was in the army or working in the civil administration of India, or for a commercial company. If you can find him in the census before and after the India births, what was his occupation - that might give you a clue. nell

many thanks for your help, im looking now, he was in chatham barracks on1871 so looks like the army . deb

Thanks for asking that question deborah, my rellies were all born in India and iv'e been meaning to check for wars and such my gg/father was in the 20th reg, have to look and see what this was there for. ...MOE!
