If someone was listed on the 1861 as being born in Middlesex, St Giles, would that be the same as St Giles Cripplegate? The person concerned lived in the Mile End area of London if that helps. Thanks Cherie

Thanks Kath. I had looked on the internet but I'm still not quite sure. The place of birth given on the census is St Giles, Middlesex but I have found a baptism record on IGI which seems to be my man (about the right date, correct father's name) but he was baptised as St Giles Cripplegate. Do you think this is this the same man? Regards Cherie

St Giles in the Fields is definitely NOT the same as St Giles Cripplegate. St Giles in the Fields is Tottenham Court Road area, the west end. St Giles Cripplegate is in the Barbican. It's possible he put St Giles and forgot to add the Cripplegate bit on the census, but then its equally possible these are two different people. Is it a common name? Have you got other family members baptised in the same parish? nell

Thanks Nell - yes it is a common name so it may not be the same person. I think I'll have to keep gathering other info. Thanks for your help. Cherie

Apologies for coming in on your thread Cherie but I was interested in your question re St Giles. I have someone in my tree whose birthplace is given as St Giles, Middlesex. I have only recentlycome across this person and was wondering just where it would be. Have only found her so far on the census, so will need further investigation. At least I now know there is more than one St Giles!!!!

St Giles in the Fields was a notorious rookery - thieves, prostitutes, poverty, filth, disease etc. There was also a lot of immigrant Irish people there. This is mid-1850s ish. nell
