First of all I apologise to anyone who may have heard this before, but I am still stuck on my great grandmother Annie Truscott. Hers what i have on her. She died in 1944 aged 60 in the name Annie Crankshaw She married in 1925 aged 42 in the name Annie Bellis, widow and married George Crankshaw. She had my grandfather and his twin in 1922, their is no fathers name on the certificates and they were given the name Bellis She had ted and Jack in 1912 and 1913 with the father named as Edward Bellis. She also had a daughter in 1910 and again no fathers name and her name was still truscott, so unmarried and living in Salford union workhouse. On her marriage certificate to George she names her father as Edward Truscott deceased but on the census' I cannot find an annie truscott with a father Edward. I also cannot find a marriage certificate for her and edward bellis or a death reference for Edward. He must have died for her to remarry as a widow as they would need proof he was dead. I have been to Salford Library and cannot find anything out about her. the address she gave on the certificates in 1912 and 1913 was 62 charlotte street salford but on the electorial role the head of the house was somebody completely different and i can only presume they were lodging. So to get to the point ( if i havent lost you already), how can I link her to a census if I know very little about her and how can i find her marriage certificate or edwards death certificate, or will i just have to sit back and wait for the 1911 census and hope she might give me some clues then. Anyway thankyou for reading this any ideas will be a godsend

Hi Looby this is a hard one .... As we have no place of birth for Annie all we know is she is in the Salford area in March 1910 when she has Edith i hope thats the little girls name, only Truscott girl born 1910 in Salford area. Annie would be abt 27 then if she was from the area there would be other Truscotts around you say she had Edith in a workhouse was it an infirmary where girls could go and have babies ??. My own Grt Gran had a daughter in 1904 in Walton Infirmary formaly the workhouse you see. There was one family on the 1881 in Salford you proberly saw them William Truscott age 44 b Devon wife Margaret age 30 b Chester Dau Elizabeth age 5 born East Indies(she was born in Bengal India 1876 and died Salford June 1881 age 4). Son Edward age 3 b Cheshire & Son Daniel age 6mths b Newcastle On Tyne. They would most likely have more children as your Annie was born in 1883-4 but i cannot find this family after the 1881. It could be possible William had a middle name Edward or he was an Edward with middle name William which he used. Keep that in mind. I saw a marriage IGI for a William Truscott to a Margaret Anne in Sheffied in 1872 this could be them. The other family i saw was in St Pancras 1891 James E Truscott age 35 b Devon Cabinet Maker Wife Annie age 35 b Devon Dau Edith age 9 b St Pancras London Dau Annie age 7 b St Pancras London Dau Lillian age 4 b St Pan... Son Alfred age 2 b St Pan... By 1901 they are still at same address Annie still at home but has middle initial of L looked for marriages for her and Edith. Edith married in St Pancras 1902 there is an Annie marriage abit bit after and an Annie L marriage in 1910 in Barnet i checked for a Edward Bellis match on 1837 for Barnet with no luck. I still think she would be from around the Salford area not London but then again if her father travelled she could be from anywhere i noticed alot of Truscotts are from Devon & Cornwall. On the historical directories site for Salford 1911 there were two Edward Bellis's Edward Bellis address 11 Crescent Rd C Cum H Householder Edward Bellis 1 Grange Rd C Cum H Printer. What was Edwards occ on the birth certs ?????? This is a hard nut to crack isnt it haaaaaaaaaaaaaa Colette xx

hi all thanks for all the replies, i do have the details of the Annie L i even ordered the certificate but it is difficult to link her in as the father always states his name as John E and not edward. I had not seen the two edwards on the directories before so I will look in to them. Edward Bellis occupation on the birth certificates was 'a carter'. The burial couldnt be him as she married oct 1925 and was already a widow so 1926 was a little too late. I dont know whether she had any siblings at all as i know very little about her and cant seem to go beyond her. I read up on salfold union workhouse and it states that it is a place for really poor people or where unmarried mothers were sent. So again she could have been sent from London and be part of John e Truscotts family especially as her first child was named edith, she could have named her after her sister but as i said I cannot link her and cannot find her first marriage incase that certificate has more details. Hope this makes sense but she is driving me potty!!!

from 1910 to 1922 with no luck wotsoever, im beginning to think they never married but surely she would need proof to put down widow on marriage certificate

I too am starting to think her and Edward never actualy married but lived as man and wife. There has to be a marriage out there and i would have thourght 1837 would have it. There is always the possibility that their names are down wrong he could be Bells and she Triscott Trascott but i would say for one maybe a mistake but for two i think thats pushing it but anything is poss. On my own Grandads marriage he is called William Ralston Ralston middle name should be Joseph god knows what happened there and that was in the 1930's. Another thourght is if they never married maybe Edward left her and she acted like a widow or maybe he went into an asylum and was not likely to come out again. I know it all sounds grim but you never know. But i think a relook at 1837 under Triscott Trescott. The other thing is she has to be on the 1891 and 1901 but maybe shes not using Annie or her father has died and her mother has remarried so she could be down as her stepfathers surname. Have you looked on 1837 for her birth stupid question i know Anyway lots of heads are better than one on this. Colette xxxxxxxxx
