Sorry to take so long to reply- been at work all day. I have not looked in woolwich for him as I think there is no name index. I did ask for look up of the address where he lived on Marriage certificate - Artillery place, but that was 1856. No luck I'm afraid, so I guess I will have to go to the records office and plough throug unless it comes online soon or something. perhaps i should put up a request as I am not certain about name index... I guess his dad might be around that area too. Thanks for your help Alice

Hi Alice, Have you looked to see if he is in Woolwich in 1851? That will give you an idea if he went there with his parents or with his wife. Janice

Back then, not a lot of people could read or write, so registrars and census enumerators wrote down what they heard. Could have been written down wrong or even transcribed wrongly.

I guess he could have done though my ggGrandma always spelt it that way. Alice

Is it possible that he changed the spelling from Cocks at some point.

Heather , i think that is quite likely, but the info from the 1861 census when he has a family shows children born in Greenwich and chisel hursst. Later the Chiselhurst one says she is born in lewisham. his wife was born Sydenham.... Without a name index (is there one for this area?) no one will be willing to look up the 1841 I guess. Alice

Is it possible that he moved to Woolwich after he was born (before the 1841 census)?

Ironically I live in Norfolk , and James is my only Norfolk rellie so far - you can imagine how excited I was when I found hiM! BUT He is not on the 1841 for Norfolk - i have searched all throught Thetford AND his birth is not in any of the three Thetford parishes. WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE??? Any tips please - It is SOOOO frustrating having resources nearby but not knowing where to start! Alice

I have my gg grandad on the 1861 census in Woolwich. He says he was born in 1835 in Thetford. His name is James Cox, married to Elizabeth. I know from his marriage cert that his father's name was George a shoemaker. See Below
