William Bibb, a Tailor. Cannot find him as yet on the 1841 London census but have found a likely death in Mar 1846 which means I wont find him on the 51 to obtain a birthplace. The family settled in London around 1819 where 3 children were born. The eldest 2 children were born 1815 Staffordshire and 1817 Gloucestershire. Anthony suggested that I should access the Settlement Certificates in the parish chest material deposited in either the Staffs or Glos parish in question as these should indicate where William originated. I'm afraid I have no idea what these are, what information they will contain or how I would go about accessing them? I gather it will mean a trip to either of the area RO's but would appreciate any input from people who have actually obtained these. Googling hasn't helped! Thanks Lou |

Hi Lou It might be worth searching the surname on A2A to see what comes up. Alternatively, contact the Records Offices. Occasionally, the information is beautifully indexed. More usually, they would simply be able to say if documents survive for particular parishes. You can get wonderful details from Poor Law material, though often very sad. There was a recent thread on this. If I find it, I'll nudge it up. |

Brenda Thank you for your advice. I've just been searching on A2A and can't work out how to use it but will go back and have another try in a minute! I did get as far as finding out there is a catalogue listed for Settlement Certificates for Northleach but it says c.1733 so the records may be too early for my needs. Julie Sadly not but thank you for looking...young William Bibb was born 1815 in Barton under Needwood in Staffordshire. Brother Peter was born 1817 in Northleach, Gloucestershire. Neither place seems to have a lot by way of records online! Lou UPDATE: Just seen you have updated yours...can I have the details on the Worcestershire marriage please? |

Finding my way round A2A now! Haven't come up with anything astounding yet although there are certainly a lot of records for the Staffs/Worcestershire area for the surname. I'm still leaning towards William being from there originally, but need the proof! Lou |
