I have a relative showing up on the 1901 census as Nessie Hutchison. All the other childrens names seem to be have been shortened. Apart from Vanessa what could it be short for??? Jill I have found my Nessie and she was Agnes after all. Thanks for all the suggestions. Jill

I would say Agnes and the nearer you get to Scotland the more likely this is.

That makes sense if you recall that Agnes is pronounced Ann-yez in Scotland. I think it could be a name in its own right too. nell

Thanks all for the replies. Sheila and Marie, she was born in Scotland so that might explain it. I am scottish myself and am horrified that I didnt know this - at least I have learned something today. Jill :)

I just looked on freebmd for Nessie, with surname* and there were several listed on the marriages. I have some with Bessie as a proper given name, so why not Nessie too.
