County Archives usually have copies of the Probate calendar to search. Being Yorkshire(!) I don't part with my £5 until I've checked it out myself! Just a warning though. I sent for a will recently and it took 5 weeks to come. I was ready to highjack the postman, I can tell you! I've sent for ones before this and they came quite quickly. Apparently they, too, are inundated. Anne

Thank you Barbara, I certainly have one I could send for - I have a copy of my grandfather's death certificate and I do know that he left a will so I should at least have some success with that one. Thank you for the info - I will send today. Regards, Dea x

Thanks Kate, I know the date and address for one person so will send to York for that. The other I only have a rough idea of date and not the address. Been trying to find his death certificate for the address but no luck yet. Val thanks for the info for crown court, that might be easier for me for the second one. Cheers Jean

Sorry to butt in but I didn't know you could do that Kate - When you say send off to York - do you have an address or more details on this as £5 seems like a good deal to find out about a few of my relatives. Also, does it usually take very long for them to search.? Thanks, Dea

If you go to the crown court they should have a probate office only goes up to 1966 if you want newer ones need to go to main cities like London, Plymouth, Bristol or Birmingham

You don't necessarily need to be near the place. If you know the date of death and the person's address when they died, you can write off to York with £5 and they will search for the will and if they find it will send you a copy. If you don't know when they died, you can request an extended search for extra money, or you can search the National Probate Calendar yourself if you can find a place where they have it for the years you want to search. Thought I was asking too much! Trouble is I am nowhere near the places the wills I need are likely to be.

Er... Scottish Documents website has some from 1901, but apart from that I don't think so. It would be great if there were. I think the Probate Registry is supposed to be working on it, but don't know when it is likely to go online. Kate.

Are there any online sites to search for wills in 20th century?
