I have just found a wealth of info on my Scottish relatives from www.familysearch.org in the International Genealogical Index. I searched my GGG grandparents and it gave me their dob., marriage date and place and a complete list of all their children with dob and christening dates as well as their parents - quite amazing - I am still on the ceiling. How has all this info been collated or has someone else has researched the same people? Sorry to sound so dim, but am a relative beginner, although with all the help I have today, I have traced back relatives to 1795!!!! Thanks to anyone who can help with an explanation. Linda Thank you so much everyone, especially Janet who, not only has been a wonderful inspiration, but also a tremendous help. I have done as she suggested and checked out the results of the Familysearch IGI with Scotlandspeople and, so far, so good. However, I cannot seem to be able to locate the IGI information source, even following the simple instructions you kind people have given to me. I am probably being a complete dipstick, so can some kind sole help. This is the Source info I have from Familysearch:- Film No: 538009 Page: 252 Reference number: 27503 Donald Cameron 1795 - 1858 Banavie Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland - (father John Cameron, mother Janet Stoddart) married Janet McPhee 26 October 1819. Additionally their children (11 of them) are also listed, together with christening and birth dates and where they were born. The info provided by IGI is so comprehensive I feel that it must have been provided by another researcher of the Cameron of Kilmallie. Thank you everyone. Linda

HI, check the source of info cos some has been added by family, if the source says extracted, its definitely correct, it is a good site, FreeCen get their records from LDS and send them to volunteers to transcribe. AL

If the information is from Parish Registers then it's probably correct. If the information is 'member submitted' then it's only as good as the members research. If it's member submitted you should be able to click on the reference number at the bottom of the page and it may give you the details of who gave the info and some contact details. If you would like someone on GR to check the source details for you, please post the names and dates for the people you found.

I also traced my Scottish Ancestors back to the late 1700's on the IGI but decided to check it all first with Parish Registers in Scotland before going any further and I have to say that the IGI was spot on correct after I had checked on a visit to Scotland . Maybe Scottish Registers have been filmed mainly from the Church Registers. Did go fuzzy back from about 1780 and I really needed the Parish Registers then to be sure. My advice is check with the original registers before you get too euphoric. Janet

The entry for Donald Cameron's birth with that film number is annotated: 'Record submitted by a member of the LDS Church. The record often shows the name of the individual and his or her relationship to a descendant, shown as the heir, family representative, or relative. The original records are not indexed, and you may have to look at the film frame-by-frame to find the information you want. A family group record for this couple may be in the Family Group Record Collection; Archive Section. (See the Family History Library Catalog for the film number.) These records are alphabetical by name of the father or husband. ' So yes it was submitted by someone who researched the family: probably a member of the LDS who was looking to baptise their ancestors into the LDS. Some of these submissions were well researched, others based on family records or sometimes guesswork. When you click to see the content of that film i the following shows: Endowments for the dead, 1888-1970; name indexes, 1888-1906; heir indexes, 1906-1959, 1970-1972; baptisms for the dead, 1943-1970 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Manti Temple These were all entered at least 35 years ago so I wouldn't hold out too much hope for tracing the submitter.

Thankyou Judith - what you say makes a lot of sense, albeit rather disappointing - I thought I may have unearthed some relatives in the process of searching my ancestry. Not to be it seems. I am very grateful to you.
