i have double checked now im home from work and its def burnham sutton, maybe it was a area of somewhere does anyone know?

i think he was born in burham sutton his mother was born in stanhoe, as im not from anywhere near norfolk i dont know if these places exist now, been googling the names not come up with anything yet.

Hi Do you know what part of Norfolk he was born? As for buying I think you can specify the mothers name - if it is not the right one they charge you £3 rather than £7. Have never tried this out though! Penny

the name on his marriage certificate is william mercer, but i know he is not the true father and his mother didnt marry till later on in 1871, so no help there but thanks everyone, the 2 from 1870 is there anyway i can check the mothers name or do i have to buy both

Hi Julie The certificate might have your ancestor's father named on it, but that is unlikely. Go to the home page of freebmd and look under information and the coverage charts to check whether the period you want has been completely transcribed. If not, you might find a reference on 1837online. Otherwise, he might not be registered. If he were born in a rural Norfolk parish, he might be baptised at the local church. Sometimes (though never with my ancestors!) the father's name is mentioned on the baptismal entry. Good luck!

Hi The certificate could be just blank where father is. Do you have his marriage certificate? What name does it give on there? Penny

can anyone help please i am trying to get the birth certificate of my husbands gg grandfather, all i know is on the 1871 census he was 8 mths old he lived with his mother, and her widowed father, his name was robert hill his mother susannah hill her father george hill. he was born in norfolk, but susannah was not married does anyone know if the certificate will have his true fathers name on, or could it say father unknown, how can i check i find the correct certificate i cant find it on free bmd
