Does the father's name and job on a marriage certificate have to be real or can he make it up as father on birth certificate is unknown |

Since no one asks for proof, I guess it can be made up! One of my ancestors obviously thought 'milk carrier' was a bit downmarket and described his father as a 'provisions merchant' - his father was dead and not able to contradict him. I also have several ag labs who appear on certificates as farmers. nell |

Although a father could not be named on a birth certificate (after 1875?) unless either a) the parents were married or b) he was present at the registration and could acknowledge fatherhood, as far as I know there was nothing to stop the father being named on that child's marriage certificate. |

He put his dad down as a chemist and he was dead so I am confused found out who his mum was though but not sure if the dad is right as the one I thoght it was would only have been 20yrs old and he was not dead when my grandad got married when he was born and then his mum ended up with a shop on the 1881 cencus and she was a widow from 1871 march.
