Does anyone know if the name ABEL is short for anything? Gerri

Richard in Perth

Richard in Perth Report 12 Apr 2005 01:34

Gerri Abel is of course a name in its own right - Genesis chapter 4: 4:1 The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, 'I have gotten a man with Yahweh's help.' 4:2 Again she gave birth, to Cain's brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. Richard

ABEL Gender: Masculine Usage: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Biblical Pronounced: AY-bul (English), ah-BEL (Spanish) [key] Extra Info: Popularity, Related Names, Namesakes, Name Days Options: Contribute Information From the Hebrew name Hevel which meant 'breath'. I have tried to put them on the 'trying to find' board but because they are not on 'My names' I cant work out how to add the message. Maybe Im missing something?....brain cell maybe? lol Thanks again all...Yes I was aware of Abel being a name from the Bible. Gerri x

Gerri If you want to put them on Trying to Find (which I think is really for living relatives) you have to add them to your tree and then put on your message. Then you can delete them. I expect you can't find them because they have been mistranscribed - have you tried Morton, Norton etc. nell

Trying to find is not just limited to living people. This is what the instructions say. 'If you wish to add a Trying To Find entry for a specific name then click here to go to the 'Your Names' Area. You can then add your entry against a particular name's Trying To Find section and your message will automatically appear on this board too' If the name is not already in 'Your Names' you need to do as Nell has suggested. Add the name to your family tree (This is what causes it to appear in 'Your Names') You can then add your entry on the message board as per the instructions.
