I found my Gt. Ganddad on the scottish 1881 census in Old Cummock. John Wightman M 30, bithplace IRELAND. He is listed as a Lodger with the McCormick family. Head is Michael McCormick also listed as being born in Ireland, the rest of the McCormick family are born in Scotland, so i guess my Gt. granddad is staying with a cousin. The advise i would like is now do i go about finding which part of Ireland he comes from, all that i know is what my dad use to tell me, that his dad would make him go on orange marches. Cheers Sue

The info about orange marches suggests what is now Northern Ireland and probably Belfast. Have a look at the Tracing Irish Roots section - find it by scrolling down the homepage. Also, if you put Ireland or Irish in the search box, there may be some threads with useful info. nell

Thanks Nell and Liz Don't think that John is mine. My John was born in 1851, Parents David Wightman and Ann- Mary Wightman (nee I cant read her maiden name on gt. grandads marraige cert). sue
