on a birth cert from 1887, it says mother susannah ryman formerly known as eades. does formerly just mean her maiden name or is it that she was married before?? corrina

I'd say it's her mothers maiden name. If she had been married before it should say, late...... then formerly....... Kath. x

I have a number of marriage certs where 'formerly known as' refers to their own maiden name, but it can also mean their previous married name (one of my certs has 2 'formerly' names - it was her second marriage)
