I went to vote in my local elections today. It was deadly quiet so I asked the Man if he knew whether or not I could see the CURRENT Electoral Roll. (We have had a thread about this - I was denied access at my local Council Office under the Data Protection Act). He produced a document which says: Access to the Current (Rolling) Electoral Registers. The law has recently changed. In order to see a copy of the FULL current electoral register, an application must be made in writing to (this office) stating the reason for your request. An appointment will be made if your request is successful and you will be allowed to look at the register under supervision. Handwritten notes only may be taken. You may NOT use this register for commercial or profit-making purposes. Me and the Man discussed this and came to the conclusion that we could see why access would be denied to the FULL register (battered wives hiding etc) and we think that some Officials have incorrectly interpreted this instruction to include all registers. Interesting - I shall go back to the Council Office armed with this info and see how I get on. Marjorie |

I agree, jobsworth at work here. Although its too late for me (I was trying to trace someone who owed me money) I shall test it out again and try to force their hand. Interestingly, the bit about 'The Law has recently changed' did not actually give the title of said Law - I would like that clarified too. Marjorie |

Hi Marjorie, What really puzzles me is the fact that 'they' are allowed to sell our details as recorded on electoral rolls to companies who then bombard us with junk mail - yet quote data protection if we commoners want to view them. Val |

I agree with what Christopher and Laird have just said. When you sign your electoral registration form each august you can tick to go on the edited list which is not readily available to the commericial people. However the proper register is now only available to government bodies and the police. |
