Here is a very intriguing mystery - Robert Munro (Clerkenwell 1825) was married to Hephzibah Higgins (Birmingham 1827). Because of the date of his birth, I can only find him in later census reports , living with Hephzibah (Elizabeth) and his children . What I really want is to know who his father was. There is a big family mystery here as there is a legend of a title refused and a lost inheritancce. I have found out that Sir Charles Munro of Culrain (Baron of Fowlis) came to London (where Robert and his humble cockney descendents come from). He had four sons. The edest one, John died without children. I wonder if Robert was the seond son who refused the title? The title reverted to the female line and the present Munro of Fowlis comes from this line. Are there any genealogical geniuses or detectives out there who would like to take this on? Here are some clues - there is a naming tradition in my family - Robert, Hugh, Hector, Thomas, John, Charles. A ship's log from 1650 was found in my grandmother's attic. The captain of the ship was Sir Robert Thomas Munro. An antique masonic firing cup has been passed down through the years from father to son. The Munro's started the masons in Tain near Fowlis castle. My father went to a masonic school - Christ's Hospital in Horsham. My father heard about Fowlis and was told that he was related to the Munro's of Fowlis since he was a child.

Yes, a very nice mystery!. Where have you looked? You might find his marriage ...church or civil...and have you looked at wills? Have you looked for a birth? If you tell us what you have looked for, we might be able to help. Joan

Thank you! I have ordered his marriage certificate, found after lots of red herrings and blind turnings. That should come soon although the GRO seem very slow at present. I have searched Ancestry.co.uk and the church of latter day saints website. He was born at such a difficult period really. 1837 doesn't kick in for his birth and the census periods of 1861 is the earliest that I could find him - by which time he is married. The history of the Culrain Munro's should be easy to find as they kept records but the record I can't find is of the names of Sir Charles Munro and Amelia Browne's sons other than the heir.

It's a romantic yarn, but I ask myself why would anyone turn down a title and the possible income that went with it? What did your Robert do for a living? nell

Googled 'Munro of Culrain' and there were lots of hits. nell
